Flashy paint jobs could have you stick out in traffic. So if you hot dog allot on the roads, a person can pick.you out far away. You stick out like a sore thumb.
Like everyone has said, get what grabs your attention. I like seeing flashy, candy flake paint jobs but I tend to stick to the basics. A couple dozen bikes over the years but most have been black or blue with a couple red or silver ones mixed in.
If you see any denim colors on my bikes they are just waiting to get paint over the primer.

Buy what speaks to you, IMO. No matter how much research you do, there will always be a bike that just grabs your heart strings in person. Sometimes a different brand, model, color etc then you expected, but assuming you enjoy the test ride and how it feels etc, thats the one you buy. I had full intentions of getting a black or twisted cherry road king, or maybe a street glide, and let the chrome be the flash. I now own a red pearl road king special instead, despite my triumph also being a red bike. Your results may vary :P
I realy like the denim garbage junk look that I have on my recent xl12CB
But saying that I am a polisher so I like shiny as well even black which shows up all the scratches and swerl marks in certaint sun light or artificial light and drives me crazy.
When I was younger, I had flashy colors (think 70's Mopar palette) but now I prefer to remain un-noticed on denim black; whatever anyone else may think I just don't care...
