Default Protecting painted surface

I have a Softail Deluxe and would like to protect the rear fender from scratches where the luggage rack is mounted. Any ideas what to use? I was thinking felt pad but, that will wear/rot with washing/rain.

The underseat area of my Road King Classic got all scratched up under the passenger seat, which prevented me from being able to run a solo seat. When I got me Street Glide, I masked off and sprayed that area with plasti-dip to protect it. The 3M film would work well too.

The problem with felt or a fender bib is that they can move relative to the fender with vibration. Add dust or a bit of grit and you have "sandpaper" which will quickly erode paint. 3M film or equivalent is the answer.

+1. If you're looking to protect paint you need something that is affixed, (but removable), and won't let that pesky grit underneath it. Agreed that the 3M film route is best, although I have used shelf liner - the rubberized stuff that looks like a net as that will stay pretty stationary if under a passenger pillion. But if you can, go with the film for peace of mind.
