Win on Sunday, sell on Monday...isn't that what they used to say?? I have an Indian dealer located about 3 miles from me.. Nice shop, I occassionally buy accessories there. Bought some riding gloves there about three weeks ago. Better than that, I usually see Indian motorcycles running on the highway around here......3 or 4 times a year. None of them are flat tracking though.
I installed an HD Ventilator, a decatted headpipe and Cobra 909 mufflers on my 2021 Road King FLHR and it runs great; no pops, pings, gurgles and way cooler. I've tried to make it decel pop, etc. and it won't. Ridden in 100 degree weather and not a single ping. Runs better than my 2018 RGS with a Stage 3 and FP3 (maybe not as fast, as it is only a 107, but smooth, cool, etc.).
What does this have to do with Harley-Davidsons current lack of success in flat track?
Indians are like the homely fat girl at closing time, she'll willingly get the job done and probably do it damn well but nobody wants to be seen riding her.
I own a Harley and a Indian. This bike gets more compliments than any Harley I've ever owned. Nothin homely about this. Now look at Harleys latest offering the Sportster S.... Hopefully HD will do better with the Sportster classic.
I'm just spitballing, but here's an idea. Call up Porsche (you know, the racing legend) and jointly develop a DOHC, high revving, reliable engine capable of putting out some serious horsepower and lasting more than 20 laps.
Oh, wait...
The "youngin's" here have no idea as to what you're referring too :>)
