My back starts to giving me trouble after about a week of commuting.....[:@]
I have a bad disk down around L4/L5 (slowly collapsing cause it is leaking). It's actaully been pretty quiet for the past year or so, since I changed jobs. Lately though it seems the more I ride the tougher it is getting. I definately feel it after having a passenger....but also after about a week or so of riding.
Not sure if it's the whole act of riding or just the suspension and a somewhat bumpy freeway. Could be how I sit....no clue. All I know is that after about a week or so of riding I need rest and end up back in the car for several days. Really annoying.
I tend to have trouble with my lower back also, and I find that a kidney belt helps a lot. Not sure if that will help you though since you have a compressed disc...maybe a gel insert in your seat?
Had surgery back in 81 for the same problem. Resulted from riding a rigid frame panhead with king/queen seat. Took me out of riding for a few years. I still have on occasion pain in my back. Although I love the look of the Deluxe seat, I couldn't get to comfortable. Tried shaving it back about 2' but only helped a little. Finally had toreplace it with a MustangVintage Wide Sole.Although not perfect, signifiantly better. Now I can ride 2 hrs on, 1/2 hr off, all day.

I have shaved my seat and added gel but it's just not working. I was considering traveling to Hollister for a custom Corbin seat (that way I can keep my bar). Not sure if that will be enough but it would definately be cheaper then changing bikes. I can try a kidney belt (I have one) but so far I haven't had much success with using one.
I love my Deluxe but I can't do with this pain and I find I'm riding a whole lot more then I expected. I was gonna be a RUB ... you know fair weather and weekend riding....
The problem I have with the touring bike is that I can't seem to back those things up on even a slight hill. I tried it with the Road Glide and the EG Standard. I would need to get a reverse gearin the case I don't park it right. [&:]
