Default Screw in tire... quick question

So last night I was getting ready to head out and the wife noticed I had a screw in my front tire. I decided I'll pull it out and see if it leaks. It is not leaking, but I know the screw was into the tire I'd say about 1/4". The head of the screw was up on top of the treds and the head was wore down to about nothing. My indy says leave it and if it begins to leak replace it. That is what I was inclined to do as well. It's not like it's going to blow or anything. Anyone have any idea how thick a tire is? Meaning, if you wore the treds down to nothing, basically a slick.. how think is the rest of the tire. If the screw was in the tire 1/4" how close do you think it is to going all the way through?

If you're gonna fret about it, replace the tire. Were it me and if it didn't leak, I'd move on to other things to worry about.

I'm with your indy, I'd just leave it but if it bothers you, put a tube in it or replace it.

As to you question, they vary. Typically between 1/4"-5/16".

No... as my post says... I was inclined to just leave it... As I am doing... :-) I was just curious how close it may have come to going all the way through.

You state the screw was a 1/4"; that's 8/32's". How much tread do you have left? If less then 8/32", then the screw has at least gotten into the base, if not into the belts. If the screw is just in the tread, I'd be OK with it, if it's deeper then the tread, I'd replace it. The last thing I would want is to loose a front tire. If it was me, I would replace ASAP.

Correct... It was 1/4?? into the base of the tire. Meaning beyond the tread.

At 1/4 inch deep it would be right on the edge depending on where the punture is. If its not leaking dont worry about it. Honestly if it were mine i would pull the tire and patch the inside just to be safe, who knows if with a load at speed if it causes it to leak at all. Just be careful riding and keep an eye on the tire when stopped(for food/gas stop) to see if it looks a little flat.

A screw won't make you have a massive blowout. A slow leak eventually is likely. If your borderline on needing a new tire, just get a tire. If its still got a bunch of tread maybe pop the tire off and patch it from the inside. Maybe put some ride on in the tire and call it a day. Im actually gonna put the ride on in with my next tire swap and see if it lives up to its reputation.

But id say the carcass thickens for a tire is right around 5/16 give or take. So depending on where the 1/4 inch screw was (tread/groove) you may be cutting it real close to having a slow leak .
