Bear-quality pepper stray. Will shoot about 30 feet. Do not shoot it in front of you and then ride into it; out to the side only. Running over a large dog may very well put you down ( know this from personal experience). Better, in my opinion, to stop and deal with him at a standstill.

Call them. The next rider may not be so lucky. It also starts building a case for future reference.

Seems like you would really have no time in this situation other than to react and swerve - which you did nicely.

After the fact, I would call the police to report it.

The other thoughts about pepper spray, shooting, kicking the dog really did not seem like options here.

I agree with those saying call the law.. At least you have it on record that you did.

Its not as hard as it sounds. When I was a kid I used to ride dirt bike a lot and there was a dog that lived at a house I had to go past to get to the riding trails. That bastard would wait for me and the other kids every day and chase us as we went past. I got sick of it after a while so I got a squirt gun and filled it with vinegar. The first time I went by I knew he would be there so I got the squirt gun out and was ready for his ***. As usual he came out running, barking and jumping at me so I slowed down and let him get in close, then I gave him a snout full of vinegar. His attitude went from badass to whimpering puppy dog in a split second and he never chased me again.

I too had a pit come running out at me from a yard while up in the foothills just a couple weeks ago. Seems it's pretty common on this particular road for people to let their dogs run free. A little swerve and goosing the throttle got me safely by. I reckon I should have called the sheriiff. But I just let it go.
