Default Riding after Knee Surgery

After having both of my knees replaced I am having issues with clutch and rear brake control. The clutch issue can be fixed by learning to up-shift with my heel, but the brake issue is serious. For what ever reason I cannot turn my foot inward enough to make a solid contact with the brake pedal, has anyone else had this issue after knee surgery and if so, what did you do to rectify the problem.

First i hope you are feeling better and that the surgury went well. I sometimes get dropfoot when riding because my obterator nerve being severed, where i can pick up or turn my foot in. In your case however it may be more permanent. What year is your bike? It may make sense to put a brake valve(forget the name at the moment) that allows you to set how much of the resr brake is applied when the front lever is pulled if you link them together. Proportioning valve thats it! Anyway it would link the brakes and give your bad leg a rest. Good luck op!

Yes, knowing what bike you have would go a long ways towards us being able to recommend a possible solution.

I know for the touring bikes there are extra-wide brake pedal pads available, but you may not have a touring bike so.....

You need more PT, I too had both knees and one hip replaced. Nothing replaces what mother nature put in.
Go to where you had your initial PT, explain the circumstances and your issues. They will put you through some extra exercises to get you where you want to be.

I can't help much....had right knee replaced and I have pretty good mobility... no issues with brake or foot placement. Had a scope or two on left and, again, no issues. I feel fortunate I have no issues and function well with both. In fact I went old school and removed the heel shifter off mine and use toe shift only. I feel very comfortable with that.
How long ago did you have these replaced? maybe more PT might help. Or work on the twisting movement of your right foot to see about gaining some mobility. Maybe bolt on a small metal plat to extend the pedal area outward.
Good luck to you !!!

How long since the operation? Did you do the exercises and ordered? They said I would be out of work for 12 weeks then I could go back to work on light duty then full duty after four more weeks. I was given 10 exercises to do twice a day and I did them five times a day. I was back to work light duty in six weeks ( I continued to do the exercises) and full duty two weeks later. I rode my bike eight weeks after the operation.

PT is what you need to get your range of mobility and strength back. I had ACL reconstruction, so my "normal" was probably different than yours pre-surgery, but still... it amazed me how weak I was immediately after surgery; and even after 8 weeks, when everything was healed, I was a long way from being good. It takes time.

Had total left knee replaced with ankle surgery torn tendons bunch other stuff took awhile off work year plus. Just getting back can ride both bikes one being a pure kicker. Found excercise in water helpful just moving was good. Will never have full mobility but make it what I can. Good luck, Wild Bill
