The new Softails are the best bikes Harely have ever produced.
I am glad you like your M8 Softail. The new Softails are probably the best Softails "Harely" ever produced. You can STFU already about the best bike they ever made. That opinion is subjective. You have nothing I have seen you post that gives you any cred as to what's better than what. I am not talking about riding, I am talking about owning and riding, many miles, many HD's up until now. I'm only on my 5th (counting the M2 Cyclone) in 28 years. They were all good. And 2/3 or more of everyone else has had similar experience. Before the M8. Before the new Softails. If you are one of those who sat on the fence forever and finally bought a Harley -Davidson because it finally looked like they came into the modern age, well they succeeded in reaching you. I am here to tell you, they got an update and that is all. You missed out on the previous and now discontinued models. They always got better even then. I'll get a Sportster one of these days, but you can be sure it won't be the replacement for the current one when and if that ever happens.

All opinions are subjective aren't they? Let's have fun, for most of us the next ride is a ways off already

My finances kept me from buying Harleys until this year, it had nothing to do with the introduction of the M8 models. If the M8 had been released a year later i'd be riding a Low Rider Special now. But not being able to afford to buy doesn't mean i missed out on trying plenty of other models over the last 30 years. I could have bought any bike i wanted, and if i'd have found an older model that was better than the new ones i would have gone with that. The only thing the older bikes have over the new ones is sound.
Their main demographic is aging. Seniors on fixed income don't have the disposable income younger people have therefore they are adjusting their target demographic. Sucks for us but I understand it. I just wish they'd expand without eliminating the tried and true like the Dynas.
Harley has repeated the same thing back when they got into trouble and sold to AMF who bought Harley and screwed it up. Harley doesn't listen to their customers. They defy the traditional customers and the defy the traditional Harley image and name and jump into markets out of desperation to compete with jap and foreign bikes. Then when their desperation causes them to drop lines that were once popular they get into trouble. Tradition is another phrase " what goes around comes around" but when you get desperate and make radical changes to try to compete with the cheap bikes but try to keep your prices high because your name is Harley , you sure the hell have not done anything to justify the Harley name or tradition !! Should end with question marks to pose this topic as a question ?????????????????
OP: I don't know what you're talking about, especially about dropping lines. Before AMF bought HD, you could get a Sportster or Electraglide. Two models. That's it. The bikes many came to love; Superglide, Low Rider, Wide Glide, etc. came out in the AMF years. I agree Harley would not have survived much longer without the Vaughan Beals - Willie G. buyback in the early '80's, but they also probably wouldn't have survived without the AMF takeover in the late '60's.
