Default Shift linkage


So is the stock shifter linkage still a weak point to fail? Is it worth changing out for heim joints?

Yes ... it's a weak link and a quick fix using hyme joints

Coincidence maybe. Just 30 minutes ago ordered a new chrome shift linkage for my 19 with Hyme Joints.

I thought the factory rod and joints looked strong but I wanted something that looked a little better. Made a short attempt to turn a custom rod on the lathe but it was not worth the effort when a new rod and rod end bearings could be bought fairly cheep. The simple job of changing out the rod and end joints turned into another mod. I added a longer heel shifter. Notice how the heel shifter extends beyond the back of the footboard but it is still easy to reach. That allows different adjustments for the heel and toe shifter and more room on the footboard for boots.

I have never seen a linkage fail, but the shifter shaft is definitely a high fail part on 2014-2016 touring, as has been discussed here in depth.
