Too much effort?
I'm sure if I had a desire it wouldn't be too much effort, but honestly I just don't care. I carry a mini jump starter so I will never get stranded, and when the battery goes just get a new one. I ride year round but I can see if living in snow country where it would be beneficial.

Technically speaking, you're killing the bike by riding it...

That gauge is probably not accurate enough to tell. Check it with a good digital voltmeter. It should be 14.0 to 14.5 volts or so with the engine running at 2000 rpm. At 14.7 or more your charging system is slowly frying your battery.

Tender on for winter storage. In the riding season, no tender is used. If it would sit for a month, I might put it on. Hopefully none of us would have to let it sit for that long but life happens.
