Holy Smokes, you are almost Canadian. LOL I was born in Watertown, NY and grew up in Gouverneur, NY. I get it. I lived in Roanoke, VA (Vinton).

All of the advice above is good. I'll just add that when the speed limit says 25 or lower, they mean it. There are some tight elevation changing curves. This goes for getting off for gas. There are some really fun, if you like tight curves, roads that change elevation quick in those mountain exits.

Watch out for Deer! They are not afraid of cars or motorcycles. Also you can take lots of breaks and pictures as there are many scenic view stop offs. Be prepared for rain and cold as well with the elevation changes.

Do stop at the Peaks of otter, it has lodging and a restaurant. If you like to hilke give Sharp Top Trail a try. It's next door. It's only 1.5 miles up but very steep. Took fat old me, 3 tries over month a few summers ago to finally complete it. The view was worth it. You can take a trolley up if you want too.

Mabry mill was one of my favorite Sat or Sun breakfast rides. Great pancakes.

I live close enough that I can be on the BRP at any time and take much of this for granted. Mabry Mills does have some pretty good grub, especially since it is right on the parkway.

My Mothers side is from Norwood. Mom Graduated from SUNY St Lawrence in the lates 1930's.
I have cousins in Gouverneur, and Potsdam.
We traced her side back to when that area was called New France.
That's snow and cold country up there!

The last time I was down that way Boon, NC was sort of interesting depending upon you're interests. It is a tourist trap though so things are more expensive. If you're riding from northern NY route 219 in western NY through Pennsylvania is an interesting rout. Real Americana. If this is something you may consider stay south of Rochester and Buffalo; maybe route 20 from west of Syracuse to NY54 south to Hammondsport and the Glen Curtis Museum. From there you can go south and west to Bath, NY to pick up the Southern Tier expressway or west to an hour south of Rochester and Letchworth state park; the Grand Canyon of the east. From there you can pick up NY19 south to US86/NY17 (Southern Tier expressway) to US219 which intersect near Allegany park which is beautiful too. From there you'll be on US219 south in PA which is like a trip back in time. From Johnstown, PA to the Shenandoah park north end of the BRP is another 4 hours of rural Americana. Here is a
of that. Whatever you decide we hope you take some pictures and a small journal of the trip. I hope to find the time to take a trip like this in the near future.

Shiny side up, be safe and enjoy!

Walter, I'm originally from Madrid. Currently live in Malone. This whole trip is a get acquainted effort with the Crossville Tn area in hopes of moving there after my wife retires. Nice to see other "north country" natives here.

Raider Bill, Norwood,Potsdam etc were all neighboring townships to Madrid. Nice to hear from you. The area was also known for being a Scottish settlement area. My family were Chevrolet dealers from 1929 onto 2005 when Dad sold and retired.

My Uncles dairy farm in Norwood is where I spent many a summer up until I got a car. Learned I didn't want to be a farmer.
My grandfather, uncle and cousin ran the barber shop for 3 generations.
I grew up in the central ny area, loved riding up your way in the summer.

Concerning Tenn. Maybe consider a bit south around Athen, Tellico Plains, Reliance area?

I like it there.

Lots of good recommendations here. Only thing I would add is a little place in Blowing Rock called the "Hemlock Inn". Very cool place to spend a night, and has a nice pub within walking distance. Side note, they roll up the streets early there.
