Buying a 883R
I've seen people report the rivets going well before 20K miles. As to "improvement" - improvement wasn't the point. Preventive maintenance, unnecessary parts destruction, and reliability was the point. As to issues with going without the spring plate... I've replaced my stock clutch with a Barnett extra plate clutch kit and have had absolutely no issues. I can't tell the difference (desired outcome). The benefit of course - no possibility of a spring plate coming apart. I my mind, it's cheap preventive maintenance you should just do. Skip the "monitoring"... Seems like an unnecessary hassle. Same goes for perhaps premature periodic replacement.
From my perspective... the notion of putting the spring plate back in doesn't compute.
We are all a product of our yesterdays. Mine are different than yours, doesn't make anything right or wrong, just what it is.
On my daughters 1997 883 I put in the Barnett extra plate kit when I was replacing a clutch bearing, and I don't really notice a difference. On my 2006 I just added plates since the old clutch pack had plenty of life left in it and the additional plates cost less than $20 shipped. I have a squeal as I let off the clutch and it occasionally engages very abruptly. I can really tell the difference. There is no need to replace the whole clutch pack with a Barnett and it is much cheaper to just put a new spring plate in. Spring plate is $50 and the Barnett kit is $150. So I'll put a new spring plate in next time I change the oil, I'll be good for another 20,000 miles, at that point my original clutch plates might be worn enough to justify replacement. I do my own maintenance, monitoring is pretty easy for me. and it makes no sense to me to replace parts that don't need replacing yet.
