Noticed while riding last Sunday the 6th gear indicator lamp in the speedometer wasn't lighting up. Got home and went through the service, electrical diagnostic and parts manuals without finding what trips it on when in 6th gear. The only switch I know of is the neutral lamp switch on the transmission.
Is there another switch somewhere on the transmission that I'm unaware of? If not a switch what turns on the lamp in 6th gear?
It isn't a switch. It compares engine speed to bike speed and calculates if it is in 6th gear. Maybe clutch slip or loss of tach or speedometer signal.
Thanks for your reply. I was thinking along those lines and you confirmed it. Speedo and tach both working normally and no clutch slippage. I do have a Thundermax ecm in the bike, so maybe I'll ask them if it's maybe something in the ecm.
Light was fine on the previous ride and out on the last one.
Gotcha, my bad thought '08 might have been old enough to have a serviceable side. Always messing with the bulbs on my Uncles older bike, I sometimes forget that they change stuff around :/
Unfortunately the speedo/tach is a sealed unit so no accessible bulb.
Thanks for the reply.
You can open these up, I did this winter - changed all the LEDs to blue and red. Anyways, the 6th gear indicator is indeed a small LED soldered onto the board, it should be good for life. You have an issues elsewhere.

2008 CVO Road King.
Take a look at your clutch lever operation. Is it seating completely out when shifting? Might be sticking out the last mm or so.
I am not familar with how sixth gear indicator works If it is math being done in the ECM, I would think once you got fast enough, any loss for what every reason in the math, would be over came and would be constant. Unless dirty sensor or funny wire. But if it is based on RPM and speed, I think goinng 90 would be on steady, if 65 ain't. But just guessing.
