I cant speak exactly to source but its likely the ECM that turns on based on the add on shift indicator which hooks to the data port. Mine had to learn the gears and this was based on rpm during that learn process. Mine is a newer model 2013. You may be correct that your aftermarket setup may have messed that up

The Thundermax ecm as been on the bike for 3 years and was working fine on the ride previous to the most recent one. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, will be out in the garage Saturday looking things over!

Good question; I'd never noticed if the 6 gear light on my Harley combo speedo/tach comes on when ignition is turned on so I checked. It does not.
