Default RE: Gas Pump Question

ok ive built and serviced gas stations for 14 years.. theres about 1 quart of fuel in a hose.. the soleniod valves that choose the grade of gas are in the top of the pump.. the guy that delivers gas is right about water being heavier than gas and about the pump running out 4 to 6 inches before the tanks empty... only issue is here in iowa, they dont stick for water before dropping a load ( of fuel ) .. Theres alot of tanks around in here that have alot more water than 3/4 of a inch.. but I think your chances of getting water in the tank of your bike is alot less than the chances that 16 yearold girl on the phone is gonna blow through the next stoplight and runin your day

I don't want to, nor am I trying to stir up any political B.S. on this thread, but I've seen several of you mention Chevron, Texaco, and Shell brands. Since we all (hopefully-?) are riding American (mostly) scoots, here's something to consider. Of ALL the major oil companies, ConocoPhillips is the ONLY one that is majority American owned, and its Board of Directors sit in the USA(although on the NYSE it is open for anyone to buy stock). Also, it usesa higher percentage of US produced oil in its refineries than ANY of the other Majors. I believe they actuallyhave the highestpercentage of US produced oil. There are anumber of smaller companies that do the same, but these tend to be regional if not downright local in nature. I USED to work for ConocoPhillips, but no longer. They have consistently outperformed the other brands in performance and maintaining Tier 3 quality standards. And, just in case anyone was imagining ulterior motives, I do not owna huge amount of their stockeither !!!! But I do buy thier gas and diesel. Buy American, ride American, burn American gas. Whenever possible, of course. "Typically", there are 2 or 3 seperate tanks, depending on whether you have 2 or 3 choices. They are strictly regulated, and required to meter them seperately. Admittedly, I'm not sure "how much"remains after regulated into the pump/hose. Running 5 gallon orsmaller tanks could dilute your blend down significantly depending on that meter point. I like the idea of rotating first fillers when in groups, sounds like a plan for our next run.

The pump has a safty fethure that drawes all the gas back to the tank when you stop pumping.its the law all over the U.S .So u get very little of the outher grade if any.Im the inspector and if this device dont work i shut the pump down right then and there

I've been driving for 32 years. I'm not about to start worrying about it now.

just so you all know, octane is the measurement of the gasolines resistance to burn.Meaning the higher the octane the harder it is to burn. This is because higher compression motors. The more you compress gasoline it is likey to ping (pre detonation).Higher octane will allow you to run a higher compression and more total timeing in your motor. Now considering that high octane gas is harder to burn, when it does burn, it burns hotter, making your enging run hotter also making your engine work hader. So if you burn 89 in your bike you should actually increase you gas milage and make your engine run cooler. Stock harleys are not high compression. They are about 9.5:1 or so you dont need to use high octane gas to make your bike work right. But ultimately its your choice and you will use what ever you want.

Some of the stations in this area have the three hoses, so no reasonable doubt what you are getting there. The gas looks green. (isn't the premium dyed green?)
Some of the station have one hose and three buttons. When I've used them I have looked closely at what comes out of the nozzle when I first start pumping. It looks green too.
My old ironhead is real particular about gas, and it hasn't complained yet at either type of pump, and it only holds about two gallons.
The state department of agriculture periodically checks the gasoline coming out of the pumps at stations here, and evidently doesn't find any serious octane deficiency at any of these pumps.

Wow seems to be lots of mixed responses on this topic. Of the 1600kms I have logged so far I have noticed in other towns that the premium I put in my tank must be old as my bike farted and back fired and just plain ran rough. Once returning to my town and filling up here riding for a few minutes the problem clears up. Chalking it up to old gas cuz folks don't wanna pay the price for premium I suppose..
