Don't forget Facebook for bikes. They are more realistic than Craigslist it appears, price wise.

I don't think impossible, I suspect 4-5 will put you in better range. But all about the deal and looking. Right time of year.

I disagree about money pit. I'd look for 88" TC if you can.

Also lets be honest you sound to busy to be going on cross country trips racking up massive miles.

Well, my 2002 RKC is a 88 with a 95 upgrade with tune. I'd still be good to get $5K for it and I'm seriously thinking about letting it go. The top end has about 10,000 on it or less. The bottom end is in great shape. Will need a new rear tire soon but that's about it.

It's a buyers market. Take your time and don't buy a pile of junk.....

I’d definitely rather be buying a used bike over selling my 09.

I’d never get anything close to what I’ve put into it.

IDK about where you are located, but $4000 in my neck of the woods will get you your pick of used Sportsters and if you look around you can even find some nice Dynas and Softails from the early to mid 2000s. The deals are out there, you just need to put in the leg work.
A Twin Cam is a decent motor and despite what many would have you believe, they'll go forever with a little maintenance and care.

bump your range up to the 5K or a little less and you will be able to pick up a low mileage 04-05 touring bike. My dad bought a 01 ultra with 13K miles for 4100. My brother bought a 06 street glide with 23K miles on it for 4600. About a year ago i bought a 08 ultra in prestine condition with 38K miles on it for 6K. Deals can be had just have to look and be ready to buy when you find the right deal. Also location does play in the price but i am in texas and probably considered one of the better markets for used bikes.

I vote for an EVO era bike. Still can be had at the price range you are looking for. They won't depreciate any further and some actually start gaining in value. Parts are plentiful and you can work on them without needing a computer. Very reliable engine. I wouldn't get rid of my EVO for anything. I've had people offer me double what I have in it and I turned them down. Can't say the same thing for my twin cams and M8s I had though.

i wouldn't be against the evo motor, IMO they are way under powered in the stock form. I rode my dads 1990 electra glide classic for a year before i found the my 08 ultra a bought. I agree the it is a reliable motor. Actually i am about to start looking for a Older evo road king for a 2nd bike.

As stated above by many....go for a mid 90s carbed EVO. Lots of them out there, easy to work on, parts are very reasonable.

As a first HD I would stay away from heavily modified.

When you decide to start looking find a friend who knows EVOs. It will save a lot of problems and BS as well.
