Default shift linkage project

The stock shift linkage looks like azz and the rod ends are the weak link in the stock set up. I often see folks travelling through that had theirs break and they come in looking for the little end with the rubber boot. HD doesn't sell the little ends separately and you have to buy the whole stock linkage for $20+ Most folks either change out the rod ends to heim joints or true ball jointsor buy the custom linkages that come with the heim ends. Those that like the chrome plain chrome linkage that HD sells have to pay $85+ for it. Therefore, I bought the below two items and polished the stock rod much like one would polish a brake rotor. I shouldn't have to worry about my linkage breaking now and it looks really good. I also put it together using a chrome acorn nut. Sorry that I don't have a pic yet

I've always wondered why my stock shift linkage has the ball / socket set-up on the end of the linkage and my son's 2004 XL1200C has the good heim joints on the linkage. Seems like the MOCO would put the good stuff on all the models.

I updated to the heim joint polished S/S linkage a few weeks ago. Reminds me of the first Hurst Competition Plus shifter I installed in my 1969 Chevelle. A bit pricey but it sure works better.

Unless they have changed the material the shift rod is made of, it is not stainless. It is cadmium plated steel. You polished off the plating and now have shiny bare steel. It will rust. How do I know this?..........I did the same thing.
