Did someone put a gun to your head and force you to buy it? Guess I do not understand the "questioning" of it after the fact. If you thought it was too much why did you buy it?
+1
I cringed when I forked over $16k cash for my bike knowing damn well I could have gotten a MUCH better bike down the street at the Honda place, but I wanted a Harley.
Harleys are alot like a $300 bottle of wine, it might taste like a bums *******, but it's a $300 bottle of wine.
I agree. What gets me are the people who buy a Harley and then whine about the cost. If you don't like the cost don't buy it. It is simple IMO. I wanted a Harley and I bought one plain and simple. I would love a fatboy or night train but refuse to pay that kind of money for it.
I guess if you do not like the price do not pay it.
Have you checked out the prices on Yamaha's, Honda's, etc. lately? For a comparable engine size, on their "cruiser" type bikes, they are only a couple thousand less than a Harley. for 2K more, I'd rather own a Harley than a rice burner.

The only HD I think is worth the $$ is a used Sportster 1200.......I see '06s with low miles and some mods for$7K which isn't too bad. I was looking for one for the girlfriend. But I got my '05 Kawi Nomad1600 loaded with $3K in extras w/7300 miles for $8250......new they can be had for $12K.. Oh yeah....by the way I rented every HD tourer there was before riding it and was gonna drop $20K on an EG classic until I checked the Nomad. Let's see the Nomad looked better, sounded better, rode better than any HD I've ever ridden......and feels meaner. The fact that it's so much less money too just makes me laugh.
I will give Harley this.....their paint jobs are nicer. But I'm not paying an extra $10K for that.

I noticed this as well when shopping for a motorcycle last year. I looked at a Honda Shadow Aero (745cc engine, $6800), a Yamaha VStar Classic (649cc, $6200), and an XL 883C (883cc, $7800). I looked at others, but ultimately those were the front runners. I actually started out leaning toward the Shadow Aero since, on paper, I liked the looks. Then I actually went to the dealerships and checked out the motorcycles in person. The VStar was nice, but I just felt there was some "polish" missing from the look, and the Shadow did not live up to my expectations at all when I saw it. Eventually I got a XL 1200C which was still just $1000 more than a comparable VStar, and it was about the same price as a Honda VTX1300C. Of course, when you go up into the Softail's the difference is much greater so the choice might be tougher, but I still find something I like better about the Softail look than many of the Metrics that compete in that category.
I think there is nothing that quite compares to the sweet sound of that American Made V-twin. Like it or not the HD is as American as Baseball and Apple Pie. Not everyone will buy and HD, but those who do buy one do so for a reason, regardless of the price. I have had a 72' Yamaha XS650, A 1978 SuperGlide (lord forgive me for selling the old shovel...I promise to put another back in the garage) and I just bought an 07" StreetGlide. I didnt even look at the other bike makers because I knew I wanted an HD and I would not have bought anything else. Not becuase they arent good bikes but just because I prefer the look, the sound, the feeling of owning a HD. I would buy a used HD before I bought a new anything else. You can get some supersweet old shovels and Pans for less than a new Yamaha or Honda, Suze or KAW.
I live in Italy and more or less the price list for a HD roadking classic is 21000 euro out of the dealership: it is like $ 28500 actual exchange rate.
A "poor" Sporty 1200C is sold at 11800 euro which is like $ 16000.
And they (HD) sell every year more.
Dont get me wrong, the everage european isnt so rich or stupid, Harley got a smart marketing strategy for a particular target. They sell less than in US but pricey.
Accessories: the same.
MARK222, Yam, Kaw and Honda all have larger v-twins than HD, if you compare similer engine size I think they are quite a bit cheaper. But I just bought a RG anyway. I have never owned a Jap cruiser yet did demo ride a road star and liked it. My first HD was in 1975 and I usually have both a Jap bike and HD (just got rid of an FJR1300) do I think a Harley is worth the money, no, did I just buy another one, YES.
