My 2016 Indian came equipped with the safety switch on the kickstand. I am a very experienced rider with over 40 years in the saddle but sometimes I forget. It has served as reminder to me to put the stand up several times.
I have put it in gear so many times with the kick stand down and taken off. As soon as it leans slightly to the left, the kick stand goes up on it's own. Never had a problem, except my memory. Now your results may vary, and I don't recommend leaving it down, but as one gets older, we forget.
