I've got a 2012 HD Ultra Classic. My voltage regulator went out, I replaced it, started the bike back up, now it has a very strange idol and popping to it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Kind of in a dire need of getting it up and running again.
Some more details might help. What is strange about the idle and when do you get the popping? Is the bike stock or have you had some mods done?
First thing would be to check the installation of the vr to make sure the wiring hasn't been compromised. You should also check for codes.
The idle went from a standard idol to a faster idle with popping and crackling noises I installed the voltage regulator, and it's just two plug in quick connects. Went over all other wiring and found no other issues I could visibly see.
How low did the battery get when the VR went out?
It might be working overtime now. Once one part of the charging system goes, it starts compromising the rest.
It was a brand new battery this year. When the problem occur I lost all my instrumentation and the battery was completely drain. I was also told to check the fuses to pull the ECM fuse possibly because of the engine control module staying and that last position that the bike died in
Bring the battery back up to 12.5 volts with a charger, or replace it if it won't hold that voltage.
Make sure connections are tight.
Your bike is trying to charge a battery that has been deep-cycled.
I did recharge the battery. I'll have to replace it, after I started it is when the popping and the irregular idle started. When I went to start it again the battery didn't have enough power to even turn it over.
I put a brand new battery in it less than a year ago bike ran fine. In August of this year I lost all my instrumentation on my - took the voltage regulator off tested it . Put the new voltage regulator around started it up after I had charged the battery and the popping and crackling and irregular idle occurred right away.
Make sure the new VR is plugged in properly. It should show 12.5 volts or better at the battery when it's running.
Load test the battery to see if it holds a charge.
First thing to go when the battery is down is the instruments, turn signals, etc. When everything is up and charging properly the idle should be smooth.
If none of that works, might be the stator.
