Default Brake Fluid

Just recieved my new chrome handlebar controls (Custom Chrome) for my 06 Softail. the kit is for all
H-D's single disk models1996 and up. On the master cylinder it says to use DOT5 only. I know my 06 has DOT4 in it, and that 4 and 5 are not compatiable. My question is, can't I just use 4 in the M/C since its new and no fluid has been it? Just a little confused here.. Thanks for any help..........

yes use DOT 4. since the master is new, bench bleed it first using DOT4 to clear out any DOT5 that was used during assembly of the rubber components.

Personally, I would bleed and flush the DOT 4 out of the lines/caliper and put in DOT 5. DOT 4 damages paint. DOT 5 does not.

Umm, you sure about that? I had a leak on my bike, dot 4, and it (luckily) did not harm a thing. I thought it was dot 3 that harmed the paint?

Pretty sure...Copied from another site:

DOT4
DOT4 brake fluid is the brake fluid suggested for use in late model vehicles.

Disadvantages:
[ul][*]DOT4 fluid eats paint! Small leaks around the master cylinder will eventually dissolve away the paint on your bodywork in the general vicinity of the leak. [*]DOT4 fluid is generally about 50% more expensive than DOT3 fluid. [*]Since DOT4 fluid still absorbs some water, any moisture absorbed by the fluid can encourage corrosion in the brake lines and cylinders. [/ul]

I thought that the rubber seals for each type of fluid were constructed differently and were not compatible.

close but no......dot5 is merely a silicone based fluid, and dot3,4 are alcohol based fluids.they will not mix at all.however the seals will not be effected.
moco went back to glycol based fluids (dot4) because of its water absorbing properties,(corrosion reduced in lines)also glycol fluids are more compressible than silicone fluids.dot 3, 4 and 5 ratings indicate their perspective temp. resistance.
