Default My 1992 EG

Hi To all that read this.

OK, I have a 1992 EG That is in my opinion in very good shape and running condition. It has 31000 miles on it. The motor has little mods from factory. It has a newer TC carb that has slightly larger jets then normal. I have singled fired it with a screaming eagle kit. I have put on new pipes that give it more sound and don’t restrict exhaust like the stock pipes do.

I believe it runs very good for what it is. But I have some compare questions.

It starts right up and I use the enricher for about 3 miles or 5 minutes on cold days. Warmer days I just use it to start and run for about 1 minute. Once the engine is warm it idles at 1000. If I park and return 5 minutes later it starts without enricher but it will idle very low for a few minutes then come up to 1000 again. This seems strange to me as the engine is still hot. I wonder if anyone has this experience on older engines?

When I’m riding, every once in a while it will backfire through the carb. This happens so little it’s really not a problem but I was wondering if this is a usual thing on older carb evo’s. Also It will on occasion start poping through the pipes. I will be going at a steady speed of 35 miles and it will start poping. If I increase or decrease it stops?

I do have oil leaks on various areas of the engine but they only just started since I put syn-oil in the engine. These leaks are not really leaks as the engine has never spilled a drop of oil on the ground. They are more like stains then leaks. You can see the oil staining the areas around the seams of the engine.

The bike gets about 45 miles to the gal. The plugs look very good according to the manual and how they should look after being in the engine for 500-1000 miles.

So what I’m looking for is anyone that might like to comment on my observations. Or make any suggestions. Please Just remember that I don't have much money to spend on new upgrades.

Thanks Mark

Based on the popping and hard starting, low idle conditions you have described, the first place I would troubleshoot is for intake manifold/gasket leaks. With the bike idling low and the enricher off, shoot some carb cleaner, etc. at the manifold gaskets, if idle increases, then you nailed it.

Low idle and popping are tell tale clues. Intake manifold gaskets are cheap. Also, the aluminum clamps that bolt the manifold to the cylinders are cheap and they will warp over time, so switch them out as well.

I have a 92 flstc that also idles slow when warmed up as yours does.It picks after a bit.Not worried a bit.I was told from a friend that has an older model also and is a HD mechanic that the molecular structure is such that it will not CAUSE leaks but will "seep" at some areas .I assume that is so thin and slippery that it will find these areas easier than a heavier dino oil .I tried using some synthetic and it did the same and I switched back to plain oil as that whats it was raised on..No seepage .The popping will be for someone else in this forum with better knowlwdge ,but I would think that anybackfiring through the carb should be looked intoait a bit,as there are some very HD friendly folks on this forum that can help you and will...I ,personally wouldnt modify anything as the factory does a fine job and has for many years. The evo is an excellent engine. My engine has no aftermarket mods.etc...and wont. The engine has never been tore into at 58.000 miles and runs great.I suggest switching back to dino oil and not worry about the idle that can be adjusted if need ,but pay attention to the backfire.

About the only thing I didn't look at hard was the intake. I even purchased the gaskets for it but since I had already put the tank and carb back on I didn't put the gaskets in. I did look at the old ones and they seemed OK but I guess I will have to have a look again. Like I said the poping and back firing into the carb are very minimal. Only happens once in a while. Other then that the engine runs great.

So thanks for the tips and I will have a little project this weekend. Shouldn't take long to swap out the gaskets.

Thanks again.

You know I took this bike on a trip to Montana this year. Tacoma to Red Lodge and back. It gave me very little trouble and I probably gave it more then it gave me.

I have a 2004 Fatboy. I like both for different reasons and if I had to make a choice I wouldn't be able to.

Thanks for the tips on yours....
