If that's true then yeah, its probably going to be a problem for people who are bouncing off rocks a lot.
That's where HD put the VR on their street bikes.
If a rider gets a big rock or a log wedged between the front wheel and the bash plate/VR, that's rider error and why ADV bikes are a PITA off road.
IMO, ADV bikes are good bikes for bad roads, not for off road.
Update: one of my friends said this is where the voltage regulator is
Anyone know if that's true? Right where its gonna get bashed on rocks or beaten to death by gravel?
I'm surprised they mentioned the Africa twin as a competitor, it's pretty heavily off road biased, I don't see a 21" front wheel or as much ground clearance on the pan am
vr will be fine, mine use to get beat up on my scrambler sportster and all it did was scratch the black paint off
dont worry bout the voltage regulator........the weak link is the radiator......bike needs to be air cooled ..one less thing to stuff up
Every major manufacturer went to liquid cooling on their off road and track bikes 35 years ago. Suzuki's RMs, Kawasaki's KX, Yamaha's YZ and Honda's CRs were all water cooled in the early to mid 80s.
HD may want to look at the location of the radiator though, it does seem like its in a perfect spot for the front wheel to kick a rock into it.

Yamaha took an interesting route with the Super Tenere and put the radiator on the side.

Same location as the radiator on the KTM Adventure bikes.

Yes thats true...probably explains why the newest bike in my garage is a1982FLH........but lets be honest, HD aint gonna race this behemoth and if you have ever tipped over on a steep hill climb and tried to get back on...your gonna wish you were on a 250cc.......looking at the KTM it has a front guard that covers the front wheel well enough plus a cowl that covers the bottom of the radiator as well . only time will tell.........as far as the Dakar Rally is concerned the limit is 450cc...i still think HD could have an opening somehow in the future as i woudnt be concerned about engine reliability as last year both Honda and Yamaha engines failed, robbing the American Ricky Brabec of a win, but he looks the goods this year to take it out, so long as his Honda is up to it
