Denim or Leather
We ride quite a bit in shorts and sandles, I wear my HD lacer's occasional. Ya my shin's get nasty ... and I do know where all that rubber off everbodie's tires goes...
but hey .. it's WAY cooler than jeans of _any_ type...
interesting lil tidbit, from http://www.msgroup.org/DISCUSS.asp
In studies of 'survivability' of various garment materials to a 50 MPH ride on asphalt, for example, denim lasted no more than FOUR FEET before wearing through. Kevlar, on the other hand, lasted EIGHTEEN FEET. But standard motorcycle quality (about three times heavier than fashion jacket material) lasted EIGHTY-SIX FEET. That's more than 20 times as effective as your jeans in protecting your hide.

they dont do well at all .. I have no personal experience of this but I'm sure its not pretty ...
I certainly dont advocate wearing shorts for the whole ride but as the OP stated he's gonna be on a long ride, surely there is room for a pair of shorts.
BUT ... its just like the helmet thing... some do .. some dont. I wear mine when its cold or i know I'm gonna be in the rain.
chaps, when it's cold ONLY, leather pants..... I'm afraid not.
but thats just me..

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
Since the HD test riders in Arizona wear leathers I agree with them. Denim is too hot when it's over 100F. I've done it both ways and leather is way cooler, but I don't have pants, chaps. =)

They claim their kevlar lined jeans lasted 300 meters (330 yards) at 140KMPH (+-85mph) without harming the wearers skin - click on the video too.
