Default Micro-Start XP-1

Purchase the Antigravity Micro-Start XP-1 about 2 years ago as a precaution for road trips. Never had to use it and charge it up every 3-4 month. While charge it up with their charger, I noticed the battery case split open. Looked inside and it looks as the battery swell up. The battery was not hot nor there any smoke. I unplug the charge and attempt to contact Antigravity. So far no response. Has this happen to anyone?

No, but I dropped a cell in my battery once in Green River WY. Under those circumstances, that thing wouldn't have helped.
I just push-started my bagger and rode about 100 miles to Pinedale, where I got a new battery.

Another time, I watched a guy try to start his with one after leaving his bike in an enclosed trailer while the security system drained his battery for 1,000 miles. It was too dead to work.

So...apparently, they're useless.

Had it happen to my 3 year old phone. Battery swelled up enough to pop the back cover off.

They do have limitations. Shorted cell, or too dead, nope. Ironically, I disconnected the battery in my 1200 once just to see how strong the Li jumper was, and it spun it over all by itself. I guess if you were real quick at hooking the battery back up...
Couple weeks ago my truck just clicked, tried the Li jumper and it spun the V8 over like a fully charged main battery would. Overall, I've used them enough to make them worth the investment. Good thing to carry on rides, most of the time they'll fire a Harley up just fine. I sure miss kickstarters, came in handy many times.

Lithium batteries puff. It is what happens to them with age.

In that state they should be treated with utmost caution.

People have lost their house or car to lithium battery fires.

This is not scaremongering. Be careful with puffed lithium batteries.

Used mine (a larger version) to start a neighbor's Toyota 4Runner. Worked just fine.

Mine did the same thing. I'm going to purchase a cheaper one next time as paying the premium price for this one doesn't make much sense as the warranty is very limited. My wife's laptop just did it yesterday - My work laptop did it about a year ago. Its pretty common I think batteries are just being made too cheap these days.

In the hobby world we do not leave lithium batteries fully charged for more than a day. Either "use" the battery or use a discharger to take the cell voltages to about 50% state of charge.

It can drastically increase battery life by not taking them to the full 4.2 volts per cell but 4.1 volts per cell. If you could charge these things to say 90% they probably wouldn't puff up.

Another thing that massively affects lithium batteries is charging them in a warm place and then taking them to a very cold place or rather having them fully charged in the bike's saddlebag in the garage whilst the temperature falls in the winter.

I doubt you will hear from any manufacturer as they know they are using cheap hobby grade batteries that have a relatively short life.
