On one of our last trips my buddy used HOG to get his bike to dealer in Nashville. Guy came out with flatbed, fortunately there were 3 of us and we all pushed bike onto bed, then operator raised bed up and situated bike and strapped down. He seemed somewhat knowledgeable on what he was doing, and there was no damage to bike. It took a bit, we all helped and did something and the operator appreciated the help. We had an overall good experience with this. But reading more here has me thinking about getting AAA along with my road coverage and HOG membership.
Bought a brand new 2021 Sportster 48
Bike has 1500 miles and was just in for its 1k service about 400 miles ago.
Service must not have been performed very well as my rear axle bolt loosened and dropped my belt drive. Luckily, wasn't going that fast, so kept the bike up and got to a safe place. That one is not on HOG, but their terrible service and lack of resources for a motorcycle road assistance company is laughable, but only if your not stranded in a parking lot for 6 hours in the rain waiting for a tow truck.
Called HOG roadside. First tow cancelled after about an hour.
Got a different notification from another tow company saying they were 90 min out. After calling the tow company for ETA after about an hour, was told an additional 90 min from then. Called about 90 min later to get ETA and was informed the 2nd tow was cancelled by HOG. Have now been in the parking lot for over 4hrs in the rain and nobody on the way.
The rep informed me that she "personally called over 20 tow companies" and that nobody was available. Not enough people per truck or not a truck that can pick up a bike. I asked if I was able to obtain my own tow, would I be reimbursed. She said yes, up to $100
First call I placed and was able to get an actual motorcycle tow truck out there in about an hour.
One guy with an F150 and hydraulic flatbed was all it took for $120
The problem with HOG is that they do not have enough, if any, companies that are actual motorcycle tow companies and send unqualified drivers with inaccurate equipment to come pick up your pride and joy while implementing hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars worth of damage. Just look at the other reviews from guys who were picked up by those companies sent by HOG.
If you are Harley Owners Group, I would expect nothing but tow companies with motorcycle transport equipment and experience to be contracted with you.
You are not Chevy, Toyota, Ford, or Mazda Roadside Assistance. You are Harley Roadside Assistance and Harley makes MOTORCYCLES
Another huge issue that most people are not privy to is that motorcycles do not bring in as much money as vehicle tows for these subpar companies, so they will sit on your tow bid as long as they can to wait for their rate to go up.
My membership with HOG was free with my new bike purchase, or I would cancel it immediately. I would ONLY recommend HOG to someone I absolutely hated more than anything in the world. Still waiting on the refund from HOG on the tow I had to get myself, so not gonna hold my breath on that one either.
Really wishing I would have called Motorcycle Towing OC in the first place to save myself the hassle and 6hrs in a parking lot. Tony is awesome and actually has the equipment and know how to tow a bike properly.
I have always used CAA (AAA equivalent in Canada) for decades for both motorcycles and cars. The two times I needed a motorcycle tow, they showed up with a covered trailer which was very easy for the operator to load by himself.
The difference between a dedicated nation wide vehicle service company and HOG, which just maintains a catalogue of random tow truck companies across the continent...
My rear tire went flat on my slim the summer before last roughly 70 miles from home. I'm A hog member, and have AAA coverage, to be honest, the first thing I thought of was getting the bike somewhere safe, in this case a restaurant close to where we were, I let the owner know that I had to leave it there, out of the way, in the parking lot for a couple of hours, no problem. I hopped on my wife's bike and we rode home together where I got my truck and trailer and headed back to get my bike. Other than that, I haven't had a break down situation on the road that I couldn't handle. It did ruin the ride we had planned for that day but otherwise, got the tire replaced the following week and was back on the road for the following weekend ride so no issues. We have a trip to No. Carolina planned for this summer, I see a lot of good posts above, food for thought if anything does happen to us, or anyone in my group on a longer journey. I'm also questioning why I keep renewing my HOG membership?

if you upgrade the towing (referenced earlier in this thread) it can be useful for your bike and car/truck.
I am not in HOG currently but worth mentioning.
2 decades ago I had a bike w/ spoked tires and tubes and caught a nail, leaving the bar at 2AM of course is when we noticed it flat. Had to leave the bike and tow it in the morning to fix. That was the last bike I ran w/ spokes and have no future plans to own a spoked bike again for that reason.
