Default Learned a good lesson today

the hard way. Going home last night I heard a strange noise under my bike then all hell broke loose. I broke off four of the five bolts holding the pully to the rear wheel. I had put on new rims a couple of months ago and put the permanent sealent on the bolts, but they still worked free. Moral of the story, when you put new rims on, you should still go back after a few hundred miles and recheck the fit. I didn't do alot of damage, but I certainly could have.

One of the riders on our recent Forums ride had the same problem with his custom wheel and chrome sprocket. We worked on it at my house before the ride, and then he had to work on it again before he finished the ride.

Nope, but I thought it was at first. The hub took a little grinding, but the rim didn't get a scratch.

I think the chrome is too slick for the loctite to get a hold of. I think the threads should be chased with a tap, and the bolts should not be chromed. JMO

I'm sure you'll be checking those bolts quite regularly from now on.
I'll bet your heart was pumping a mile a minute when that first happened.

A few years ago while riding with some friends. One guy just had PMI rims & brake calipers(just got them).Well on the highway he applied the brakes & the rear caliper broke off & followed the rear disc right into the rear fender & came to a very loud & scary halt.I wasn't even on the bike & it scared the hell outta me,so I wasn't surprised to see his hands shaking when he went to light a cig.

I agree. I went and bought new ones that are not chromed. Now I need some touch up paint for the swingarm. It got alittle beat up.

Make sure that the old loctite is all removed before using it anew.

Although we all forget to do it, those bolts should be checked as often as possible. I've seen some nasty results from just this thing at the shop.
