Default Where to get 12v from for heated grips?

Hey gang! I'm installing a set of Titan X heated grips on my '08 Ultra Classic (throttle by wire). While planning my attack, I read through the very basic instruction sheet that came with the grips and it all seems simple enough. Basically just two connections need to be made, one ground wire and one 12 volt DC wire (equal to or greater than 5A).

I don't want to go direct to the battery. Though that's obviously the easiest way to do it, I'd like the ignition switch to kill the power to the grips so as not to kill the battery should I forget to turn them off. Seems simple enough, right? Well...I'm not exactly well versed in electrical. I'm no dummy but electrical stuff can quickly baffle me. With that said, where is the best place to connect my 12v lead and where would you run your ground wire to if it were you?

I have everything shown in the wiring diagram, I just don't know where might be the best place to connect my leads? Any help is greatly appreciated.

This is a photo of the wiring diagram supplied with the Titan X heated grips.

Did you check to see if you happen to have the heated grip connections already under the fairing where the models with OE grips connect to? If not, depending on the fuse requirements, there’s a connector at the headlamp that is unused other than for HDI models or you can get a piggyback spade connector to you cig lighter connection.

Good suggestions! Since the bike never had heated grips, it didn't occur to me to look for existing wires for that application. I'll start there. If that proves to be fruitless, the cigarette lighter isn't a bad option. I dont know which connector that your talking at the headlamp....

It's time to head out to the shop and poke around a little....

I found the "Position Light (HDI use only)" wires easily enough. An orange/white and a black wire pigtailed right into the headlamp wiring, just up from the headlamp connector. Each lead has a simple butt end connector already installed on it, each with a dust cover protecting it. I think is the most accessible way to go about this install. It should end up neat and tidy and easy to get at should I need to (for whatever reason).

Thanks!

My '08 Roadie was prewired to the grip. Blow off a grip. Bet there is a connector you can fish out of there.

Thanks! I wired the Titan X heated grips to the two unused terminals at the headlamp connector. They are shown in the wiring diagram as "Position Position Light (HDI only)".

Works like a charm so far. These grips shut off if the voltage drops below 11.5 volts for more than a few seconds. I currently have the rocker boxes off my 96ci and am waiting for new ACR solenoids to arrive (which is why I've moved on to the grip install). Since I can't start the engine and be sure that the voltage across these two leads won't drop below 11.5 volts, I just used my battery charger to bring the voltage up and steady. Once I get the top end back together and start the bike, I'll get a better idea if wiring to these two leads was a good idea or not. With that said, others have done it this way and it seems to work for them.

Thanks for all the help folks! The install wasn't so bad! I think they look good as well.
