The diagram works fine on a touring bike but no on a softail. That is why I tied into the running lamp feed. Shuts off with the switch and is on with both high and low beams.

The three position switch I used is stock wired in the up position, off in the center, and on all the time in the down position.

Why dont you just look in the service manual, the Australian version has it wired to the high beams. I used the oem way on my fatboy when I added passing lites.

If they are wired into the high beams then they don't work on low beam. Tried that before I used the running lights.

Does your bike have the 2 position factory toggle on the upper fork cover that turns the passing lamps off and on?.

I was wondering how this always on modification and/or your 3 position switch interfaces with that.

I can find no NJ prohibition against aux lights and hi-beams being on at the same time.
Just says you can have no more than 2 headlamps. It defines a headlamp as a major lighting device. Aux lamp supplements headlamps.

Anyone know of any state that prohibits the aux lights being on when hi-beams are on.

I did the pictured mod yesterday on my Road King. It takes all of next to no time at all and you can still operate the spots with or w/o the high beam, depending on what you like and where you are.

There is an added benefit in that if the H/L goes out, you'll still have light to the passing lamps. I run them all of the time anyway, anything to get you noticed. I don't usually run the high beam during the day, so I don't think that will be a problem and at night, it is a a courtesy to turn off the high beam anyway, so I don't think it'll be a problem.

Do you have a reference for this. Doesn't make much sense to me that the aux could be on with the low beam but not the high.

I posted how I changed the wiring on my 2007 Softail Heritage so that the passing lamps stay on with the high beam, and leaving the original wiring intact incase you want to change it back. I like the extra light because we have so many deer around here and I see trucks with four white lights on, so I figure I deserve the chance to defend myself against hitting something. I also figure the bureaubrats that wired the headlights like they did, won't be there to fix me, my bike if I do hit a deer much less care about how long I live. (I don't think the government elitists like bikers anyway nor do they like gun owners. So I'm going to carry my G26 and put the high beams on!!!!!! I had to say that.)

in TX, it's 4 forward facing bulbs max whether on high or low beam. There are also regs on how much light (in lumens) can actually be projected out at 300 feet. A combination of a headlight (high or low beam) and passing lamps doesn't even come close to that limit
