i have an 07 fxdwg, front tire is dry rotted arond rim, the bike doesn't sit i have 7800 miles on her, went to dealer service writer told me i'm ok not to worry would bet his bike i would be ok, looking to replace the dunlaps to other name brand what would anybody suggest michelin, metzler or avon
I have no experience with anything other than Dunlops, and just over a year experience at that.
I believe Metzlers are the popular tire of choice. A friend of mine (who pops on this forum from time to time) and who has 30k miles on his 07 Ultra rides Metzlers. If that helps..
I just switched from the dunlops to the Metzlers. I like them alot so far. A buddy of mine has racing bikes and owns a motorcycle shop and he says he wouldn't put anything but Metzlers on his sport bikes or cruisers.
I have Metzeler ME880s on my Night Train. They're a big improvement in handling and wet riding over the stock Dunlops. I seem to be getting about the same mileage out of them as I did with the stock tires, so an all around step way up!
At any rate, if I had a 2007 model with a cracked tire on it that had any tread life left, I'd be hounding the dealer for at least partial credit toward a new tire.
I have a buddy with a 2005 Softail that had the front tire crack last summer at about 5k miles. The dealer replaced it. There may be some issue witha batch21" Dunlops.
I worked in the trucking Indusrty for 25 years and it seems when ever a manufacturer goes on strike.....the company tries to cut corners the quality of the tire suffers......its prob a cheaper grade of rubber. I would be after the dealer to replace them on an 07 bike
I don't have one of the links handy, but there are a couple web pages out there with some interesting information on tires that I didn't know before, such as the fact that tires have a code stamped on them that includes the date of manufacture. It's possible that your tires were sitting in a warehouse someplace for too long before they were shipped out and mounted on your motorcycle which can dry them out.
Actually, here's one web link that talks about this:
