Am I missing something? Did I write anything to you about this? Are you the only person in this thread? Are you one of the pussies with a big ignore list, so you don't realize other people have posted?

Its like the news or articles on internet. Hillarious reading the comments. People going off or asking questions that were answered in the article. I suspect the average person just looks at the title for news and articles, and forms an opinion. I would have thought little better on a forum, since by nature forums are for discussion. But how many people went on about 911? Did anyone even address his concern ?

Thanks all for your comments. I did learn about a couple of options such as the SPOT, had not heard of, cheap trac phone, was aware of but had not considered or satellite phone.
I am aware of Zumo and other dedicated GPS systems that would solve the cell service limitation.
Being frugal (cheapskate) I am looking for low cost and no subscription costs.
I will carry my no cost extra phone this trip and see how much no service areas I run into in the mountains before I look for another option.

Sometimes I do carry my work phone. Different carriers. In the US we call them cell phones, or just phones more often now.

Plus he already said in the first post in the thread, he knows that an old phone can still dial 911.

Some people have trouble reading.
You posted this right after my post and said some people have trouble reading. If you notice your first post covers none of the things you are saying above "I think the guys concern is the phone getting damaged, flying off his handle bars, or being seperated."

You asked this general question and I answered.

Never anywhere did I imply I was the only one in the thread. To answer your next question, I don't have an ignore list although if I did there would probably only be one ***** on it..

I haven't seen a Personal Locator Beacon mentioned yet. Much better performance over a SPOT device and no monthly/yearly fees. The device itself is more expensive though.

I wrote an article about them a few months ago on my website. SPOT -vs- PLB

n it..
I wrote I do carry a second phone at times.

Many people here wrote how a fun without a carrier can dial 911, which he also wrote. They also spent time talking about satellite phones, when his concern was damage to the phone on the handle bars, or losing it in a crash. which is actually a good point. If you wreck and you mount your phone on the bars, you may have an issue. I thought he brought up a great point.

Bring up sat phones is good topic too. When I went to Alaska I considered it, but didn't. Many places in the US lack coverage too. Sometimes you can get a text out, even if you can't call. So that may help if there is any in and out low signal.

A Sat phone would be great for some of the areas I go where there is no signal at all. I considered it several years back but the rates at the time was still through the roof. I think you can now get a 60 minute plan for $60- $70 a month. I'm waiting for the rates to drop some more before I go that route.

Do they make any you can just buy minutes for and avoid or minimize the monthly fees? I am guessing most people don't plan on replacing cells with them, unless you lived or worked in a area with zero coverage, and no land line.

I spend time in areas with no coverage, but not all day. I put a booster in at my camp, it helps, but varies.
