Default RE: Do oil coolers work?

In the last edition of AIM Donny Petersonmentioned oil coolers & the need for them in the newer bikes along with synthetic oil & a stage #1. Claims that the above will double the life of a engine. Thanks for the excellent & helpful comments. I have 20+ grand invested in my 07 EG and I'd like to see the engine last longer then the monthly payment to the Eagle Bank & so I am going to spend the $300 for the touring oil cooler. Thanks again!

Default RE: Do oil coolers work?

I've purchasedthree bikes in my life without a cooler, rode for a season then added a cooler.

All three I had the same experience, after the cooler was installed the bike ran a bit stronger, smoother, and I could boogeyup steep hills in fourth gear thatused to require shiftingdown to third.

My 1987 Softail Heritage would ping if the weatherwas over 90 F, and I had a passenger on board. If I went up the smallest hill it would knock like crazy. After the cooler was installed, it never knocked again.

Default Oil Cooler, Themostat, In Line, Where to buy

I have a question: Does anyone know where I can buy a Lockhart DP 180 in line oil cooler thermostat or equivalent? It goes on the oil lines separate from the cooler itself (for 2008 Sporster w/HD oil cooler - which has no thermostat.)

I've looked on the web and can't find anything - did Lockhart quit making them?

PS "Post New Thread" button did not work.

Bud.

My dad and I both have Heritages he had an oil cooler and I did not. Both of us have temp guages. During our ride through Yellowstone this year we compared our temps and he was a constant 30+ degrees lower than me. After that I went out and bought a oil cooler. There are a lot of different coolers out there but I went with Jegg and have been happy with it.

I am planning on installing a cooler from Motorcycle Innovations on my 07 Wide Glide. Don't know if I actually need it but I figure it cannot hurt.
This particular cooler is not like a radiator, it is made from aluminum with cooling fins. Over a certain temperature oil starts to break down and permanently looses some of its lubricating and cleaning properties. Some say if you run synthetic you don't need to be concerned about this. I figure I will run both and change oil every 2,500. It's one of those things where you never know if it was needed or not.

and what does that have to do with harley engineers putting coolers on some models?

Why is the average car thermostat 140* to 190*??? Are those engineers just not as smart at HD?
Gee...maybe it's because the car thermostat controls coolant flow and not oil. Gotta keep that coolant below boiling or it loses it's ability to absorb heat. What oil temps to cars run? Neither of mine have an oil temp gauge.

I'm sure they work but I'm yet to be convinced they are necessary. Where I live it gets Hot-Hot and I have never had a problem noy having a cooler.

Also the sales manager at my dealership (a friend) told me that the MoCo says they aren't necessary.

Yes, mine works. It's an HD thermostatic Premium oil cooler, roughly $300.00 from dealer. About 20 deg. drop while moving, only helps slighly (5 deg. or so) when in heavy slow traffic. Thermostat begins to open at 175 deg. I putit on my '07 FXSTC when nearly new that is otherwise bone stock w/3800+ miles on it.I'm in South Florida. You'll need a 7/16" Allen wrench (hard to find) and an1"1/8 deep socket to install.
