Has anyone traded in a bike that you've owned forever, and now you want to buy it back?

how do you contact current owner without violation?
Dealer said they left 3 messages about me wanting to buy it back. They never got a response from the new owner. What if I wrote the new owner a letter asking him to let me know either way?
The only bike I would ever want back would be my 2002 Kawi ZRX. it just changed hands and I was contacted by the new owner who was asking questions about it... the bike was pretty well known in the ZRX community so they found me by posts on a ZRX website. I know where the bike is but I doubt the new owner is going to be willing to part with it.
In my line of work I can search vehicle history by VIN, if it is registered or titled in the US chances are I can find any vehicle it if I wanted to

I have been seeing these types of posts frequently lately both on this forum and other forums I belong to. People trying to track down an old bike, Jeep, or whatever they sold.
I am starting to think that this is some part of a scam, kind of like the harassing phone calls I have been receiving about some real estate company wanting to buy my house.
