Actually, the device uses the Apple network and will find the tag almost anywhere.

You may try reading the Apple website.

However you need to note that it cannot be used for clandestine tracking purposes as it has limits before it alerts

Yeah you should.

"AirTag is designed to discourage unwanted tracking. If someone else’s AirTag finds its way into your stuff, your iPhone will notice it’s traveling with you and send you an alert. After a while, if you still haven’t found it, the AirTag will start playing a sound to let you know it’s there.

Of course, if you happen to be with a friend who has an AirTag, or on a train with a whole bunch of people with AirTag, don’t worry. These alerts are triggered only when an AirTag is separated from its owner."

So if someone steals your bike and has an iPhone when they ride off on your bike it will notify them of the tracker.

so, eventually some apple device that is running the App, needs to be in Bluetooth range of the device.

Edit: And the more people they can convince to enable the app, the more people they can track.

NO THANKS!

If you are serious about a tracking/locating device, get something like the following. It’s true GPS, small, but requires a subscription.

LandAirSea 54 GPS Tracker - USA Manufactured, Waterproof Magnet Mount. Full Global Coverage. 4G LTE Real-Time Tracking for Vehicle, Asset, Fleet, Elderly and more. Subscription is required.

Maybe just say you were wrong, apologize, and move on? You might find people respect you more than they do now.

I dont know why anyone would want to recover a bike that's been stolen.

Dude,,.what’s your point? I’ve stated exactly how they work, and offered a better alternative, if you really want to track something.

And even worse, it notifies the device that is in range that there is a tracker.

Yup…a resurrection.

I bought 2 AirTags on June 21, 2023 to try them out. I connected one to my dog’s collar. With the other one, I’ve done some random experimenting, such as putting my AirTag in random places, such as around our neighborhood, shopping areas, stores, etc.
Here’s my summary of my findings:

Positive:
+ after 3 months of use they haven’t died
+ can locate devices that are within 30’ to 50’ of your Apple device, or 30’ to 50’ of someone else’s Apple Phone.

Negative:
- it needs to be within 30’ to 50’ of an Apple phone with Bluetooth enabled, that is connected to a network either Wi-Fi or cellular to show its location.
- In all my experiments of placing my AirTag in random places that I frequent…where I might lose something like my wallet (again)…I was never able to locate it.
- it’s very thick to keep in your wallet.
- the location works on our 2 iPads, but stopped working on our Phones in mid-September.

Bottom Line: it’s useful for locating something within 30 to 50 feet of your phone. So, if you have it attached to your keys or your wallet, and misplace them in your house, it will locate them for you. Otherwise, thinking it will help locate a device in some other location is extremely unlikely.

Two thumbs down 👎 👎
