Now if I could just get my phone to quit telling me when I'm close to my wife's Airpods...

No thanks;

The AirTag is a tracking device.
If somebody stills my bikes I don’t want them back.

As to how they work?
It uses unsuspecting iPhone User’s phones to pass-off the AirTag’s location AKA- Big Brother!!!

Two thumbs down 👎 👎
I wouldn't rely on these things for anything like my bike, wallet, or dog.

My cousin sticks them in his luggage & golf bag in case the airline misplaces them during travel. That makes sense, because if they somehow ended up at a different airport or they get misplaced somewhere else in the same airport, you're pretty much guaranteed to be within range of network.

To me that sounds like a much better application for an air tag, vs locating the wallet you dropped while taking a **** behind a dumpster (been there) and for any kind of theft-recovery I would look for something with fully independent locating services

^^^ still requires you or somebody with an IPhone running the app to be within 30’ of your device to locate it. Unless you are in a very congested location, that is very unlikely.

Of course, if you happen to be with a friend who has an AirTag, or on a train with a whole bunch of people with AirTag, don’t worry. These alerts are triggered only when an AirTag is separated from its owner."

So if someone steals your bike and has an iPhone when they ride off on your bike it will notify them of the tracker.
This is true. While going cross country this summer, my phone alerted me that I may be being tracked or something like that. Can't remember the alert's wording exactly.

I wondered if someone had put an Air Tag on my bike overnight at our hotel. It turns out one of my riding partners had his tag turned on so his wife could track him on the trip.
