Going to Skyline Drive with the wife for a 4 day trip. The 2000 Road king Classic has 8,000 miles on it with original tires (low, I know,I bought it this year with 6,800) The tires are just above the recommended tread depth. Should I replace them prior to the trip considering age and tread? I want to be safe with her back there so that's why I think it's a good idea.
My recommendation is to replace them. Not so much because of the age, but because you seem concerned about their condition. For your own peace of mind, I'd change them if they were mine, just to be sure. If they are "just above the recommended tread depth" as you described, get them done before you go. Nothing worse than having a flat in the middle of nowhere, and being on vacation to boot. $$$ well spent for peace of mind and one less thing to hassle with on vacation.
I would since your not going to be around town. usually tire problems develop with the last 10% of tread life.
As a foot note. I went to the NC rally in the outer banks this spring. I installed new rubber before I left. As I traveled I stopped at different HD dealers and was really surprised at the number of people on the road having tires replaced due to flats. All were in transit to the rally and stated they thought they might squezze a few more miles out of the tires.
The tires are 7 years old. I would probably replace them if they weren't near worn out. This is especially true if you are going to a trip of any distance. Why take the chance of ruining a trip over a tire that only has a couple of thousnad miles left in it at best?
I've got about 14k on my rear and still has good tread left. But it's only a year old so age isn't a factor. If I had a 7 year old bike with 8k miles on the tires, I'd replace both more for the age than the wear. Like others have said, more for peace of mind.
