Don’t feel dumb, you found the problem! Years back a buddy had an Econoline van, with rod knock. Yup, the higher the rpm the louder the knock and more vibration. Everyone agreed, rod bearing’s about to go. We started tearing it down. Removed engine shroud from the cab. The guy underneath says, “hey wait, listen to this….” He starts rattling the exhaust. Yup, broken exhaust bracket. Sure sounded like it was about to throw a rod. A rubber mallet dan be your best friend.
I test rode my Tri glide yesterday after changing the water pump and something wasnt sounding right looked at what I thought was everything about a half hour ago I woke up in my sleep and remembered I hadnt tightened the lower bottom bolts on the lowers at the bars . I knew it was something simple.
Many years ago i took a heritage saddle bag mount and placed a fender washer with a bolt in it and mounted it behind the master cylinder. A place to hang my padlock for locking the fork. Worked great ! Then one day a noticed a banging sorta sound when ever i hit a bump. Drove me crazy as i could not locate it. So i headed out to find some speed bumps and there it was , everything i hit a bump that lock would bang alittle.
Solved the problem by placing a piece of vacuum line on the bracket i had made. Been silent for 28 years now.
