For a couple months, my Deluxe has had a rattle at the top of each gear. I had fist bumped just about everything to see what might be loose. Everything tight. It kinda sounded like a rod bearing. Then it sounded like it was coming from the primary.
So, I took the primary cover off just to check it out. Maybe the compensator hub came loose... So, it had been apart for over a month, and finally got the time to button 'er back up. Everything was looking good.
Took the ol' gal for a ride.....rattle rattle at the top of each gear. I'm thinking the worst, as we tend to do at times.
So I'm riding through the neighborhood in first gear, and the thing is rattling away. I move my head around, and tightened the gas cap, and then I put my hand on the dog bone cover....
Silence!
The stupid dog bone cover! It was tight, but apparently wasn't sitting down all the way. Took it off for another spin around the block.....glorious!
So, relieved that I didn't tear into the motor for not the right reason, and felt stupid at the same time for not looking at that in the first place! At least now I have fresh primary oil in it!
Fall riding may commence!
I had a similar rattle on my ironhead. The rattle turned out to be the gas tank rattling against the frame. I raised it up some and that was that. Glad you got yours fixed.
Funny story (true or not, not sure) there was a tech competition. 5 identical cars, 5 techs and the first one to find the problem with the car wins. Techs started ripping the cars apart doing their diag and getting really into. They where driving them, hooking them up to their scanners. listening under the hood, putting them up the hoist. Then one tech finally decided to do a "walk around" and found a tail light out. BINGO.
Dog bone....a one piece handle bar clamp. My Freight train Nacelle has a cover that goes over it, held on with two screws
Not mine below....if it were, I wouldn't cover it!
Had a terrible rattle on the 02 Dyna, quite audible, looked at all the obvious, starting on the right side, up and over down the left side. Found the fwd control shift lever bouncing around in the primary case, replaced the two bushings . Now that lever shaft is as snug as a bug in a rug. Just have to be persistent in the search for the rattle.
