What They Say - "I just found these old Harleys...have no idea what they are worth...any ideas?"
What They Mean - "I'm looking to sell these...know perfectly well what they are worth...but am going to skirt forum rules by framing my for-sale post as a question."
I never heard it termed like that. There were two basic configurations of Shovels. '66-'69 still used the generator cases (we call them genny-shovels), In '70, they went to alternator cases ( we call those cone-shovels). That coincided with the beginning of the AMF-era.
Yeah, I just made up the term for descriptive purposes.
As others have said, the bottom bike is in the '66-68. Many call them a "pan-shovel", because of the pan style (generator) bottom and new shovel top. I believe the correct term is "early shovel". The bike in my sig is a '66. It was also the first year for an electric start, but has the kick start also. AMF bought HD in '69, and brought out the alternator bottom some called the "bowling bag"shovelhead in '70.
This is probably no help as I don't have a clue what they are worth.
