Scamming is getting worse and worse by the day. Just got off the phone with a friend who was on the phone this morning with the IRS. Someone got his info and filed a fake tax return with a refund!
This guy will just return under a new name and email address.
Most of us are trusting, and many of us give too much information out.

That happened to me about 8 years ago, somebody in Florida got my SS number (we had just bought a house, guessing they got it from the paperwork because I never give SS# out unless 100% necessary) and filed my taxes for me. They got $11,000 refund, and I got the headache of dealing with IRS for almost 2 years. I was only due something like $200 refund, but they were very creative in filling out my taxes. IRS guy said "I wonder how that happened" I said "did you see the special on 60 minutes of the guy in Florida telling how to do it?"
Ugh. Glad it came out ok in the end, but still. Ugh.
I don't get those guys. They seem smart, clever, and industrious. There are an unlimited number of ways to make legitimate money. You'd think they could direct their talents, time, and energy to one of those ways, instead of being crooks.

If it was me Id use those email addresses to sign up for every mailing list I could find. Spam the **** out of them. Maybe search for the worst and most abusive mailing lists. 😆
I absolutely love your idea and will commence ... thank you brother....

The same exact thing happened to us. We both retired in Jan 2015. The only time I had to use our SS numbers was during the process of setting up the pensions. Well, the next thing I know someone used our info and filed Fed & State [ AZ at the time]. Big returns went to the scammer. I had never got back a refund on my taxes in the past - but they did. Feds IRS was on it - AZ not some much. The scammers did it again and got refunds from AZ the next two years again.
I locked our credit and got PINS from the Feds, AZ didn't care evidently.
Feds give us PIN numbers now every year for filing and I had to paper file for 5 years before being able to go electronic. Real PITA when that happened.
I 100% think it was someone in the retirement process that got our info. I called them and reported it but they didn't give a crap either, just like AZ.
Highly recommend that people lock their credit with the three credit agencies and request a PIN with IRS. It's irs.gov/ippin

I get a PIN every year for Fed taxes. I didn't have an issue with NC state income tax, but a few years after the IRS debacle, somebody filed and collected unemployment insurance using my name. The unemployment folks said I was flagged as possible ID theft, but then they got a new "system" and the flag didn't carry over. So they paid somebody unemployment under my name. That was less of an issue to fix than the IRS thing, but still a PITA.
