Over the windshield. Looking through one that has collected bugs or in the rain doesn't cut it for me. Mine is a Freedom shield with recurve at nose height and directs the air just over the top of my helmet and that of my passenger.

I believe it's best to look over the windshield. It should be as tall as your nose. I've cut several windshields to fit the riders. You don't need to spend all that money for a "custom" height.

It's bug country out here (lots of farms, fruit trees, and vineyards): ride any length of time and your windshield is covered with bug guts. Looking through the windshield would be dangerous. I currently have a recurve and then top that with a deflector so I can see over the top (of both) yet push the air, turbulence, and most bugs over my face shield.

Less bugs and maybe I'd see it differently, but around here I definitely want to be looking over the windshield.

In '68 I bought a 350CB Honda. It had a windshield which I immediately removed because only wusses ride with windshields. I left Ft. Bliss and headed up the the Rio Grand into NM. I got into a bunch of beetles about the size of my little fingernail, felt like I was being shot with a 22, I think, don't really know. Anyway, when I got home I put the windshield back on and haven't had a bike since that didn't have one. I have always looked over them.

Watching videos it seems like the preferred height is the top of the windshield to line up with the riders nose. But then there are the guys who like to look through their screens. I understand its all personal preference and all that, but being this is my first windscreen ever.. I'm wondering what you long time windscreen people like and why. I guess I can cut mine down if I decide to look over it in the future. Thanks for your answers and opinions.
Just got a new one from Harley and they told me you are supposed to Look over the top.

It’s what motorcycle windshield makers like Memphis Shades recommend. Think about it.... when it rains and you’ve got no windshield wiper to clear it, you’ve got to look over it to see. Or when it inevitably gets covered with bug guts. But the property sized windshield you can see over will still put air high enough over your head that it doesn’t cause buffeting. I think the chin to nose height of windshield top is a good rule of thumb.

I have the stock quick release windshield on my Dyna Switchback. I look through it but I can look over it when I sit up real tall in the seat. It works well for me.

I like to be able to look over the top of the shield and see the road about 200’ ahead when sitting normally. That leaves the shield high enough to duck behind it in the rain.

My current setup is a bit too low for my taste but a 21” shield is the tallest they make.

Above the shield. I have not good eyesight, therefore additional layers of reflections, scratches and smashed bugs are unwanted.
Oh, anyway I removed the shield

Default shield

I like mine to be able to look over! I have had them on my King and Deluxe at 15-16 inches with the recurve! The recurve is a game changer with the curve at the top of the shield pushes the wind up and over your head and makes for a nice ride! Check out Clear Shield very good product!
