Cheap has all sorts of bad illusions attached to it. Inexpensive DOT 1/2 helmets are all over the place. Personally, I bought a Vega DOT half helmet, it fits well and is very comfortable, w/o being a mushroom style helmet. It was about $50.00 and I've seen a lot of other less expensive DOT approved for about the same price. A DOT approved helmet doesn't have to be the price of a carbon-fiber to be good.
Do yourself a large favor and try one on before you buy, sizing varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

I love my Gmax 17S 3/4 helmet, its dirt cheap & very well ventillated, it has a great shield that comes w/ it too! It is $40 on ebay it was $80 at my stealer (Jap bikes not HD)

Not cheap but good and comfy from what I understand. That will be my next one. Right now I have a $40 1/2 helmet that is ok as far as comfort but I don't know that it is that well made. The HJC and Bell 1/2 helmets tend to give you the ***** head look.
