So What is the difference between a $35 DOT helment and a $200+ DOT helment? (besides the obvious $165.)
If you read this rather lengthy but informative article, you will find that the cheaper DOT helmet may in fact do a better job of protecting the ol' noggin than the more expensive, harder helmets. My conclusion was buy the cheaper helmet, which I did as mentioned above. (GMax 35S) i would try one on before I bought it. I ususally wear a large, but in the Gmax I wore a Medium ...FYI
HJC makes pretty inexspensive helmets, but I think they lead the pack for the classic "mushroom head" look on their half helmets. they put a fair amout of foam and such inside the shell, so it makes for a thicker overall "wall"... hence the mushroom look. Also, that thicker wall creates more lift at higher speeds.

Fulmer Hombre DOT----$50. This is a half shell with visor. Great lid, and doesnt feel like you have a parachute strapped to your head. Our local Honda dealer had them..
Perhaps you could make on out of paper mache. Paint it black. From a distance no one will be able to tell.
Or how about wearing a collander on your head? Just blacken it with a magic marker.
Football helmet? Batting helmet? How about a helmet from one of those soldier playsets for kids?
Try a swap meet/flea market. good luck.
