Battery or Voltage Regulator

If you start the engine and it still reads batt voltage your charging system isn't working. (you should see over 14)
I was lucky a few years ago and it turns out my regulator was bad (easy to replace). If your unlucky it may be your stator which is tuffer to replace.

With a five-year-old battery, start there with a new one. You have a problem and a bad battery will kill new parts.
Hook your maintenance charger to new battery for 24 hours. They come low usually. Then start it and with a good AC/DC/Ohm meter hooked to maintance plug.
Cranking should not drop below 9.6 DC shows plenty of reserve amperage. Running at 2000rpm or high idle, should read between 13.5 and 14.5 or so. Never over 15.
If it does not come up like that, turn it off. You should now have 12.7 or so. 12.3 is discharged. It will show a charge voltage till the headlights kill the surface charge when you first key on.
If it's not charging, you need to start at AC voltage before the regulator. If they are correct, it's the regulator. Those three 3 phrase wires should show no grounds with ohm meter. Running around 40 - 50 volts AC across them. (3 checks)
A lot of details were left out in that last sentence. See YouTube.
No real user check for regulator other then mentioned. It can vary. Probably always 13.5 minimum. Then if battery is 12.4 not running, it will show 14 charging.

The guy unplugged my stator to get at the filter, and didn't plug it back in.
I got about 12 miles down the road, and noticed my turn signals not working. I figured out the stator plug issue, and everything worked again. I only mention this because (for me,at least) the first indication the bike isn't charging is the turn signals not working.

One time on my Dodge truck. I was wrenching on something and lightly touched the wrench across the two Alt terminals, little spark - "no biggie". Well, the next morning, dark out, heading to work and the truck was about 2 miles form the house and I noticed the dash seemed to be dimming, then it seemed light the headlights were not the normal bright, about that second the truck - felt like it was not running right. Flip a bitch and head home! About 1/4 from the house the truck was really running bad and then just died... The power was sooooooo frinkin low it would not even power the door lock. Towed the truck how with an ATV and put that thing on a charger.
I managed to barely touch those two contacts on the Altenator and poop a 30 amp fuse. The truck ran about a title of 4 miles on battery only....The stupid fuse cost me about $12 bucks and was something I had to get at the dealer.
Why is so fun to say "Flip a Bitch" ??????? Oh, of coarse for the youngins that means making a fast U-turn and hauling azz....

I'd check ac out of stator. Should go around 100 bolts ac reved up. If that is good could be connections at vr.
I would not waste money on battery, cause you might be spending money elsewhere.
Also physically inspect VR.
