Default Thunder Max Tuner

Is it worth the cost? Complications?

No personal experience with it. But from reading about it on this forum it doesn't appear to be as plug and play as advertised. For the cost I would expect it to be.

Why do you believe you'd want to replace the ECM currently in your bike?

I put one on a 2021 street glide for a guy. I tried talking him into a power vision. I'd never used a thundermax and I have used the power vision working with fuelmoto. He was convinced the thundermax was the better deal because it came with the wide band sensors...I tried...I really did lol. So he gets the thundermax from fuelmoto and brings it to me and I put it in the bike. Went smooth enough, didn't like the length of the o2 lead for the front sensor because it left the connection right in front of the oil pan under the bike. Its kinda exposed if you ran something over. To the real point ...the only map support for the new bikes with the new ecm is through thundermax themselves. Fuelmoto has no maps developed for it. It's possible that has changed in the last 2 months, since I did the install, but it's definitely something to be aware of. I think there 2 or 3 different maps on the thundermax site to choose from. I was told to use one that was similar and to auto tune. This guy was a picky pain in the *** and complained about hardstarts, fuel mileage, motor noises. He had a 131 installed with Rhinehart system. I will say the guys at thundermax are great to work with and were very helpful and were always quick to respond with map changes or answers to questions. The way that data logs are sent and then updated maps are retrieved is so easy I honestly thought I messed it up. He ended up finding a dyno tuner that could tune with thundermax and he says it runs perfect now. Not sure if it does or not but I'm just happy I'm off the hook because he was the most difficult person I've ever dealt with...ever!!! Hope that helps lol

I have one on my dyna. It's not very difficult to set up. Once you get the hardware installed, you pick a map closest to the configuration of your bike and load it. Then ride it different speeds, rpm's, etc... Same with any other auto tune. After a while you plug it back it and write what it learned into your map. After a few autotuned writes into my map, my bike ran way better, snappier throttle response, started waaay easier.

I'm running nitrous and a quick shifter through it, and it hasn't so much as hiccupped. Compared to the fuel pack 3 piggy back tuner I had on it previously, its leaps and bounds better. Plus, the support for tunes and the like is pretty damn good. You press the auto support button and it sends everything to the techs.

The only downfall is it doesn't have live sensor monitoring like some of the others if that's important to you. I'm talking about a little screen to look at. Or maybe it does, I haven't checked lately

Also, you need 18mm bungs on your exhaust.

I just installed one on my 02 Eglide. Agree about the o2 sensor leads. I ran mine up. And the plug could be much smaller. It would fit fine in a 55 Buick with a small block. But it’s ridiculously big, and ended up right on top of my injectors. I’ve put 500 miles. Didn’t realize I needed to apply the learned changes until today. I thought it applied them as I went. I opened the software. Searched around. I think I found a tab somewhere that said something like “apply learned data to tune” in fuel trims or something. I clicked it and it did some stuff. Haven’t ridden it yet. I have to crack my throttle to get it to start on hot starts. I’m thinking the iac isn’t opened enough. I’m not sure if the changes I applied today will affect the hot start problem or not. If not I’ll go into the software and open the iac a we bit more. I think the bike runs a lot better than stock even before I applied the changes.

I'd seriously consider dyno tuners in your area before purchase. Tmax is more accepted on the eastcoast. No tuners really deal with Thundermax here on the westcoast. I had originally bought and used Tmax on both my Dyna LRS and TC Streetglide. Not too big of a deal to setup and tweak, but more parts to install than necessary to run a tuner. I eventually went TTS when I went with a crate S&S 124 in the bagger (no way I was risking a motor on a tuner). Also pulled the Tmax went TTS on the LRS. Both run great tuned with TTS over the TMax. Just my 2 have run both. I personally would suggest TTS or PV over Tmax.

If you really believe you got to have the widebands (why?), why wouldn't you just go with PV and Target Tune?

I put one on the '07 EG I had, which had the most lean messed up ECM map I have ever witnessed from the factory. Tmax worked flawlessly and the bike idled smoother, ran cooler and got better mileage - 100% improvement for that bike.

Who is going to do the tuning? If you're taking it to a shop/dyno, ask them what they prefer to tune with. You want your tuner to be proficient with the product you task them to tune your bike with.
