Thank you guys it is so much great info here. I guess for what I am looking for Harbor Freight might be the solution here. I wrench less than in previous years but I record more videos on Harley on my YouTube channel so it would be good to show proper technique as I get occasional grief from watchers about not using torque wrench.
i am still small channel with only 1700 subscribers so hope to get to this 2000 soon
I just looked. I have 3
1 HF 1/4 inch/lbs
1 HF 3/8 ft/lbs
1 Craftsmen 1/2 ft/lbs
they all get steered in the original case and undone before storage.
IF I had the funds when I bought these I probably wouldve bought more expensive ones but these have done the trick for me. Dismantled 1 motor halfway once to replace cams and done many repairs and parts changes on 2 bikes over the last 17 years.. torgue my car, truck and trike wheels often with my big one.
I have a strong aversion to Chinese goods...for purposes of THIS forum they would include poor to no quality control, dubious metal quality, unclear source. YOUR HF wrench may be decent but in my experience there is no consistency in chinese consistency of product- they focus on cheap- , Their materials are of inconsistent and dubious quality (I refer you to a rtecent thread on Chinese risers that "look" just like the expensive ones. I see no pride of product in a company that names its tool line after an American city.
The above reasons, in addition to several legitimate political ones remove PRC made torque wrenches from my list of considerations. Harbor freight being perhaps a prime offender in the above regards.
Can someone recommend a good in lb range...I have a 3/8 drive for the poundier torques. starts around 5 ft lb. What are some of the lower and upper inch pound numbers for general motorcycle work? I assume (?!) a 1/4" drive is best for these lower torque settings.
I have harbor frieght torque wrenches in all the main sizes, plus I like the Wheeler F.A.T. torque screwdriver torque wrench in inch/pounds for hex/star and straight or phillips screws. There are times you just need a screw driver torque wrench. I originally bought them for proper torque on my clip-on bike shoes but they work great for other uses (rifle scopes, tightening screws, etc.).
