The other part of this game is to position themselves to offer more on paper for your trade in. People really fall for that number.

Simply ask the OTD, Out the Door total price and if it’s not what you want to pay and cannot negotiate it down, move on.

Many years back I had a local come into my PD for a police report of his stolen bike. Back in the days when dealers tascked on a few grand just to put the sold tag on.
Umfortunate part was his insurance company was paying out the retail value, less the depreciation. All those inflated fees were out of his pocket. Worst case you never see those costs for a loss.

Can't see how they can push them out the door when the best loan rate a bank will give is 7 percent.

So I have been looking at a 2022 Heritage and I emailed the dealer "what would it take to get this bike off your showroom and into my garage" They have had it for at least 10 months

The response was - I am happy to get some numbers together for you. Are you wanting cash or financing? Also what is the address you will be registering the motorcycle so I can get you an out the door number?

MSRP on this motorcycle is $22,424

Factory freight $600

Dealer Prep $938

Plus tax, title, licensing and fees.

This is obviously the starting point, we would be willing to do $1,000 below MSRP to start.

I don't know why they would care if I pay cash or finance through HD. HD is offering 3.99 percent on certain 2022 and 2033 models which this bike qualifies for

Any tips on getting the price lower?

Make an offer at a price you feel is fair. I have never, not even on our 2021 SGS, paid over MSRP out the door. Back when we purchased our 2017 CVO Limited it was a left over and they were motivated and we left at almost 4k under MSRP.

You May have to play one dealership against another.

All new vehicles include shipping in the msrp as well as the dealer invoice. Ordering a new truck now and I see the dealer invoice. $2000 shipping cost. No dealer is going to eat that cost every time and stay in business

Because this a left over in the color combo & chrome that I like and the other bikes that I was able to find within this state were blacked out

Now their sister dealership local to me has a 2022 vivid black & chrome (preowned w/ 300 miles) and they are asking 18k plus whatever fees. I am not real crazy for for a black vehicle

I've seen the bikes roll off the truck at my dealer. They're pretty much all together. The baggers need the windshield installed. They check fluids and perform a safety check and a few other things, but it ain't anywhere near worth $3,000!

I don't understand the mentality of paying a "set up" fee. That is a cost for the dealer to put the bike on the floor for sale. Why would anybody EVER pay a fee foe their internal cost?

Particularly when the set up fee is paid to the dealer in the form of a 2% "holdback" fee deducted from the dealer invoice.

As to why dealers care about finance vs cash? Many states (including here in NC,) allow dealers to tack on up to 3% additional interest on a auto / motorcycle loan and not tell the buyer. (Always ask the finance guy what the "buy rate" was on your loan.)

(Late to this thread so I apologize if these issues were already addressed.)

Why vent? Just don't buy it. If everybody refused to pay the shakedown costs they'd be dropping them rikki-tik.

I looked at buying a 2023 FLHTK this Winter. In Wisconsin. The advertised price of 3
$32k seems expensive , but I was ready to do it. When I got the quote, I thought they must have forgotten to credit my trade in, but the reason it was more than I expected was $4,600 extra in destination, dealer prep, RDRS, $1k surcharge, and the increased sales tax. I checked with 4 different dealers, they all acted like these fees were not negotiable, so I bailed.

I just got another quote. They increased the trade $2k, but this bike was two tone so it was a wash. I’m just investing in my 2012 FLHTK. I could do a lot of repairs for $10k.
