Default Insurance question

Me and a friend were talking about doing a 3 or 4 day trip this spring or summer to camp on Assateague Island. My friend doesn't currently own a bike, but up until last Summer he owned and rode a 1999 1200 Sportster.
I have been tinkering with an 07 1200 Sportster for a while and it is almost road worthy, so if this trip comes to pass, my friend would be riding my Sporty and I would be on my 95 Dyna.
My question is around insurance coverage. How does it work if, God forbid, he has a spill, or something happens to damage the bike, or if he gets injured? Would it be covered under my insurance, or does his insurance cover him?
I live in Pennsylvania if that makes any difference.

I would call your insurance agent in PA that knows your policy.

From your friend in the insurance business - Every provider is different. There are different riders within each policy. THEN you can have a 'policy in your hand' and there could be a change your not aware of. You absolutely need to call your carrier.

BTW - Where in PA are ya? Im right over the bridge from New Hope.

I guess I need to get on the horn with my agent. I just thought about this scenario while I was riding in to work this morning.

BTW, I'm a little over 2 hours west of you, I live in the sticks, right in between Lancaster & Harrisburg.

Insurance typically follows the vehicle/owner. Make sure your buddy has a valid MC endorsement if not your insurance most likely won’t cover anything that may happen.

That's how it works, at least in my jurisdiction.

Couple years ago I bought a metric cruiser for my brother-in-law to ride. I added him to my policy as an occasional rider; the insurance company needed to see proof that he had a valid motorcycle license.

This is the main reason (liability) I don't let (most) anyone ride my bike or trike.

Insurance coverage varies from state-to-state. Even IF your friend has some sort of personal medical insurance and he is injured while riding your bike, your insurance (bodily injury coverage) will likely come into play and unless you have a high limit of coverage if his injury(s) exceeds that limit you could face a personal lawsuit.

I would have your friend log onto Progressive and get insurance in his name and list the bike there. I would NOT add him to your policy. If he gets hurts or hurts someone else you will be dealing with it.

Have fun on the trip though.
