I keep my own inventory of parts in my garage. That's the only way I can easily maintain my motorcycles and help out my riding friends.

I learned to do that with my Evo. I had a large inventory of spares that I stocked at home as I learned what might fail or wear out. In truth, I've not needed a lot for the new bike, but every time I do, it's always "pay in advance then wait two weeks for the parts to come in."

A big reason I started riding Harley in the first place was the ready availability of parts and service. It seems, sadly, that those days are gone and so goes a big advantage that Harley had over the competition.

I wonder if all these “bikers” go into a Ford dealership and bitch if they don’t have or can’t get parts for an 87 T-bird or a Chevy dealer because they don’t have parts for a 94 Cavalier? That how stupid a lot sound.

Sound stupid? This is from someone that has 20 years inside car and HD dealerships?
1. The parts availability problem isn't just for vehicles 37 or 30 years old per your comment. It's a real problem even for vehicles 5 years old.
2. There are less systems and I'd imagine a lower number of parts on a motorcycle compared to a car. Hence, less parts to stock.
3. Many of the parts on the older HD motorcycles, are the same parts that have been used for many years. Hence, less parts to stock.
4. Keeping basic maintenance parts in stock for even a motorcycle 10 years old, seems like a fairly simple proposition to me. The HD dealers in the past seemed to have been able to do it.
