Took a ride yesterday, had no destination in mind just went for a cruse early evening. Took some back roads around powell tn and went about 20 miles out then turned round and started heading back. I came to a stop sign just as several other bikers were going through, some stayed to let me go but I waved them on so they could all be together...then I decided to follow them. We rode probably 10 mile some on the back roads then out on to clinton hwy and up to quaker steak and lube. A couple of the passengers turned and waved at me from the bikes. It was my first time riding in a big group, with me it made 10 bikes some two up and I felt good also the cagers noticed us more than when I ride alone which made it all the more enjoyable. It was a great feeling and got me thinking does anyone know of any riding groups/clubs in and around Knoxville TN? I would love to be able to go riding with a group enjoying the outdoors and the ride, I may join the HOG chapter here is anyone else here in that too?
i'm sure most would welcome you, but it's not considered a good idea to just join up with a group of riders you don't know. this is for a variety of reasons. talent level, a particular group might be much more experienced, or not as experienced as you. riding style, some might ride out of your comfort zone. attitude, some groups just aren't that welcoming to riders they don't know.
it's considered bad etiquette to join a group unless invited....
all that being said, i'm glad your experience was a positive one and i'm sure there are several groups in your area that will welcome you.

It is? I've fallin in behind groups of riders many times on a trip and then veered off when it was time and never had a problem or perceived it to be one. I'd like some more input on this one. If some group of self important twits has a problem with some loner taggin on to the tail for a while, then F'm. I'm not suggesting jumping into the middle of a formation, I'm just talkin' about following the end of the line. What's wrong with that? If I'm missing something here someone please let me know!
I rode up on a group of 4 bikes once on a hilly country highway and they were riding slow so i couldn't pass and i didn't want to push them but after awhile I finally ended up fairly close and all of a sudden the guy in front of me slammed on his brakes and forced me off the road, he turned around and was laughing????WTF I won't do that again.
I think riding with a group and joining a club are to different things. I for one wouldn't have a problem with it. My two cents worth! Ride Safe Jrsess
I'm so glad somebody started this thread, I've been dieing to tell my story.....
During one of my group rides of about 20 I was the tail with a friends wife who was just learning to ride and I was keeping an eye on her. At a red light this dude pulls up on his bike next to usand starts a conversation with my lady friend, I said nothing. The next red light he did the same so I asked him, please do not distract her, shes very new at riding. Our next stop was at a park where this dude followed us. He acted like he was my best friend and started a conversation saying he just started to ride. What was I to do? Tell him to fok off and make him feel like a nobody or make a new friend. That was about a year ago and today we are best friends, one of the nicest people I know.I see nothing wrong with somebody jumping in our parade as long as he/she does not act like a fool, lifes to short to worry about stupid crap. We are all here for a short time, make as many friends as you can, one of them might be rich and take you on his yacht!!!!
Here's a pic ofthat dudes yacht. So you never know.
I ride in a group of 5. I like riding with my friends because we all know each others style and preferences of riding. The only issue I have with a tag-along depends on the person. If he rides too close or tries to move up too quickly, he's not welcome. If he keeps a courteous/safe distance, no problems... On the other hand, we've invited new riders to our group that we will never ride with again. It all depends on the individual.
(BTW Doc, that's what I call a friend with benefits!)
